February 24, 2009: "Moving To Canada"

Despite what you may have seen in movies, you should not assume that there was anything going on in this comic except unconscious sleeping. Get your filthy minds out of the gutter!

Anyways, I had a lot more comics about Red Noses hijinks, but I'm getting antsy about being behind schedule and I want to start drawing strips about my Panama trip. So I'm skipping ahead into March after this and those strips I'm skipping over will have to go into the vault for some future release. Have a good weekend!

What is holding you back? From what I understand your dream is to become a professional actor. Success in realizing your dreams comes from a mixture of education, talent, experience and luck. Education: from your bio you hold a masters degree, which in your desired career field would make you more than educated. Talent: from reading your comics you have expressed that you are more talented than professional actors working today. Experience: I assume after six plus years you are also a very experienced actor. Luck: I can only hope that you are not a naive lotto player that is just holding out for his day to come. So where are you lacking?

I don't know that this comment really belongs in the comments of this particular strip, but ok.

The fact is, anonymous, becoming a professional actor who makes their entire living from acting is amazingly hard. To start with, there are lots of talented actors and very few paying jobs. I've met talented actors who've worked on every major stage in Chicago and still have a day job. So market saturation is hurdle number 1. Plus you can be the most talented actor in the world and still not be what a director is looking for (eg, I will never play Stanley Kowalski).

Then there's the fact that an actor has to run their lives like a business, which means not only being good at their craft, but also having all the skills to successfully network and market yourself in ways that make you stand out from the millions of other potentials, as well as just knowing what approaches work and what don't. That's takes a different kind of thinking than acting, so when you're focusing on the show at hand, it's hard to switch gears.

All of that is a full time job in itself (with no pay), which means that, when starting out, you need another full time job on top of it to pay rent.

And then, if you're like me, you value having close friends and family and make their place in your life a priority. It all amounts to a giant juggling act of time, resources, skills, and money that I'm still trying to figure out. So my life is essentially one big trial-and-error experiment. And despite all the hard work and set backs so far, I'm generally a very happy guy. So... yeah.
